WHAT ELECTRIC (EVs) OR PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES (PHEVs) ARE AVAILABLE?

With the growth in environmental awareness, businesses of all shapes and sizes are considering the implications and the benefits of choosing greener fleet vehicles.

However, it can sometimes be a hard choice to decide which make and model is going to be best suited to you and your business needs. That is why we have highlighted the key aspects that would need to be considered, along with the different types of vehicles available.

TYPES OF VEHICLES (EVs)

Electric vehicles are the “greenest” option you can take when considering PHEVs within your fleet. They are powered by a large capacity battery, which needs to be charged from a mains electricity supply network whilst the vehicle is not in use.
The benefits of an electric fleet include:

REDUCED MAINTENANCE COSTS

With considerably fewer moving parts when compared to traditional petrol or diesel engines, EVs require very little servicing and no expensive exhaust systems, fuel injection systems and other parts that would normally need to be replaced.

REDUCED FUEL COSTS

Since EVs only use electricity to operate, you do not have to keep spending money on traditional fuel, saving your business a lot of money.

REDUCED CARBON EMISSIONS

Since fully electric vehicles do not use fossil fuels, there are zero carbon emissions whilst it is being driven. This helps to improve your business’s environmental impact, whilst at the same time improving your public image.

RECHARGE TIMES

When compared to filling up traditional fuel vehicles, charging time for a EVs is considerably longer. However, as these vehicles gain in popularity, the technology for “fast charging” is always being developed.

BATTERY LIFE

When it comes to EVs, the main source of power is their battery, which does have a limited life expectancy, so the cost of replacing it would need to be a consideration when buying a EV.

MILEAGE AMOUNTS

Some EVs will have a smaller mileage range when compared to other makes and models. This means that if you or one of your drivers are making longer journeys, it will need to be planned ahead to make use of any charging stations along the way.

However, if range is a real concern, then a PHEV may be a better solution as it uses both electric and traditional fuel methods.

TECHNOLOGY SPECIFICATIONS

Most PHEVs will come with a higher technology specification when compared to older, traditional fuel vehicles. These include variable strength braking energy recuperation, which helps to increase fuel efficiency and minimise driving costs.

REDUCED ``RANGE ANXIETY``

Since the vehicle is powered with electricity and a traditional engine, there is a reduced feeling of “range anxiety” for the driver throughout their journey. On longer journeys fuel is used to power the vehicle, whereas for shorter, urban routes the battery is used instead.

RANGE OF MAKES AND MODELS

This is ideal, especially if your business is looking to expand your fleet. With more manufacturers getting involved in the “green fleet” sector, the makes and models available are always increasing. This also helps to enhance employee benefit packages, whilst still ensuring that your business has the most up-to-date vehicles available. PHEV’s are now fast becoming available in Diesel Hybrids as well as the original Petrol engined versions. The range increases year on year.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER?

MAINTENANCE COSTS

Since PHEVs use traditional combustion engines and rechargeable batteries for travelling, there are moving parts that would need to be replaced throughout the vehicle’s life. These costs can add up over time, so choosing an EV may be a more viable option, or leasing your PHEV with a maintained contract.

REDUCED GRANTS AND INCENTIVES

When they first came into market, PHEVs were available with various Government grants and incentives. However, since the introduction of fully electric vehicles, these are not as readily available as they were before, which could have an impact on your total expenditure.

OVERALL POWER

Since these vehicles are powered by dual-engines, the petrol or diesel engine is smaller, making it less powerful than traditional fuel vehicles. If you are more concerned about performance and power, then a PHEV may not be for you. However the initial torque from an Electric vehicle or PHEV, may just surprise you!
